CareForum 2023 – The WellSky Conference Recap

CareForum 2023: The WellSky Conference proved to be a remarkable and purposeful gathering, bringing together professionals deeply committed to the field of healthcare who are also actively working to create positive change. I had the privilege of being invited to share insights about how HealthCare Dynamics International is advancing health equity, one member at a time, with one of our clients. We chose to address a topic often overlooked in healthcare discussions, which is transportation. Our breakout session drew an engaged audience, where attendees asked thought-provoking, bone-chilling questions and also discussed various strategies. Valuable connections were established that will have a constructive influence on understanding and mitigating the adverse effects of social determinants of health, so a large part of my job there was done!

After wrapping the session I seized the last opportunity I’d have to attend another session as the conference was coming to an end. “Funding social care sustainably: A case study of medical respite to address homelessness in Detroit” featured Linda Little, CEO and President of Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO). Her team is at the forefront of innovative solutions that bridge gaps in housing, health, and overall well-being. It was a true delight to hear what NSO is doing and how they are impacting homeless populations. As the presentation concluded, I lingered to connect with Linda and express my sincere appreciation for her meaningful work.

Soon after, I made my way to the main hall for lunch, where I took a moment to bless my food before drifting into a daydream…

Do you recall the biblical account of Moses and hundreds of thousands of Israelites? In the dead of night, God guided them into the wilderness, leading them to the shores of the Red Sea, which appeared to obstruct their path to the Promised Land—a place of hope and better prospects. Complicating matters further, Pharaoh dispatched his well-equipped and formidable army, complete with chariots and horsemen, to seize and return all those who sought to escape. Suddenly, by divine intervention, the Red Sea miraculously parts, allowing the Israelites safe passage on the newly created path. Just as the last of them reached the opposite shore, Pharaoh’s army and horsemen charged forward, only to be swallowed by the Red Sea.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t share how this narrative draws an intriguing parallel to the state of the healthcare system. Here, countless individuals are compelled to tread a challenging path, expending endless effort until they are physically incapable of continuing. They find themselves deadlocked, unable to progress unless they experience a miracle. Meanwhile, the affluent possess abundant resources akin to chariots and horses, but instead of extending a hand to those in need, they employ these resources to maintain their dominance and uphold the status quo.

Pharaoh initially emancipated the Israelites, but when he realized the detriment to his own interests and the setback it posed, he reneged and attempted to reassert control. Every individual deserves access to high-quality healthcare, that should include transportation, and it should not require crossing a metaphorical Red Sea to attain it.

Thank you for the opportunity, WellSky.

2023 IAMHP Annual Conference: Stronger Together Recap

Central Illinois was truly a delightful experience and it is one of the reasons attending the 2023 Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans (IAMHP) Stronger Together Conference, was a blessing for me.

During the whirlwind of our brief, action-packed stay that lasted less than 72 hours, I found solace and inspiration in the words of Matthew 5:41, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” The Bible tells us of going above and beyond, and during the conference, this principle resonated deeply.

As I presented on the panel alongside a dedicated member of the HCD International team who leads the Data division and our cherished client, I couldn’t help but notice the audience’s reactions. Many appeared flabbergasted by our success, but the truth is, it’s not magic; it’s a commitment to listening to the needs of the members and delivering customized solutions. This reminds me of another verse from the Bible, Proverbs 15:22, which says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.”

We succeeded not because we had all the answers but because we actively sought counsel, listened to the members’ concerns, and collaborated to bridge the gaps in health care. This proactive approach reflects the wisdom in seeking advice and the power of teamwork. To be frank, I was overjoyed that my team was being sought out for their expertise and I was relieved that someone else got to see how hardworking they are… but it caused me to wonder why such a disconnect on providing implementable solutions that put policy into practice, exists.

During the IAMHP Conference, several attendees approached me with words of praise and admiration. They recognized my passion for our mission, my unwavering commitment to the members, and our relentless pursuit of closing important healthcare gaps in care. In these moments, I was reminded of 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, which speaks of different gifts but the same Spirit, different kinds of service, but the same Lord. Our diverse talents and our shared dedication were celebrated, reinforcing the notion that together we can achieve remarkable results.

Moreover, I was lauded for my intuitive leadership style, driving my team to think outside the box and foster innovation. This highlights the relevance of Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” By dedicating ourselves to this noble cause, we were able to inspire innovation and foster a spirit of continuous improvement.

What a pleasant reminder that our faith is rewarded. What a pleasant reminder that going the extra mile, seeking counsel, and embracing diverse gifts and talents can lead to impactful change in healthcare and beyond.
